The Produce Marketing Association Australia-New Zealand (PMA A-NZ) held its annual Gala Dinner on 18 May at Brisbane City Hall and as part of the festivities, Brismark Chairman, Gary Lower was recognised with the 2016 Meritorious Service Award for his contribution to the industry.
The award is a tribute to Gary’s strong and loyal commitment to the marketing and wholesaling sector in our Central Markets, in particular Brisbane. It also pays thanks to Gary’s work with Government to advance the horticultural industry, his business and professional ethics and his proven business success.
Gary has been an active member of Brismark for more than 30 years and has the honour of being one of the longest serving directors of the Brismark Board.
Gary was described as a strong supporter and contributor to the community, providing aid after natural disasters such as cyclones, the Queensland flood and the Victorian Bush Fire appeals.
He is a staunch supporter of Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) and the Central Markets push for a fairer, more workable and cost effective mandatory Horticulture Code of Conduct.
As Gary was not in attendance, Hamish Montague, Deputy Chairman of FMA, accepted the award on his behalf.
“For those here tonight that know Gary and have seen his tireless effort to unify our industry, I am sure you will agree that this award is well deserved,” said Mr Montague.
“Gary is one to shy away from the limelight, not wanting to take credit when credit is most definitely due. But this humbleness is what makes Gary one of our industry’s most passionate stalwarts. When Gary speaks, others listen,” he said.
“He is humble, passionate and kind, and it’s these qualities that have seen Brismark flourish under Gary’s leadership on the Board.”
